Backend

What is a Backend?

A backend is the part of an application that operates behind the user interface and handles data, business logic, databases, authentication, integrations, and communication with external services. While users interact with screens and buttons in the mobile app, the backend can process requests, retrieve or store information, manage user accounts, and exchange data through APIs.

Why it matters

Many mobile app features depend on processes that users do not see directly. Booking systems need to store reservations, e-commerce apps need to manage products and orders, and applications with user accounts need to retrieve the correct information for each user. A backend provides the infrastructure required to support these functions. App builders and no-code platforms can simplify backend development by providing built-in databases, integrations, and configurable functionality.

Example

A customer books a service through a mobile application. The app interface collects the selected service, date, and time, while the backend processes the request and stores the booking information in the database so it can be accessed later.
