App Icon

What is App Icon?

An app icon is a visual symbol that represents a mobile application on a user’s device and across app distribution platforms such as the App Store and Google Play. It is one of the main elements of an app’s visual identity and usually incorporates recognizable brand colors, symbols, or graphics. When creating a mobile app, the icon must also meet the technical and design requirements of the platforms where the application will be published.

Why it matters

An app icon is often one of the first visual elements users see when discovering or opening a mobile application. A clear and recognizable icon can strengthen brand identity, help an app stand out among other applications, and make it easier for users to identify it on their device. A properly prepared app icon is also required when publishing mobile apps on major app stores.

Example

A coffee shop creates a branded mobile app using an app builder. It uploads an app icon featuring its recognizable logo and visual style. The icon appears in the app store listing during publication and later on the customer’s smartphone home screen after the app is installed.
